Is it true that writers are pillagers of privacy? Yes. And it is also true that others get hurt along the way. But what are a few hurt feelings along the fiction trail? After all, thousands died to build the railroads; millions were crippled and wounded in wars that were presumably fought to create better worlds. Am I saying that the literary end justifies the means? I'm saying that writers had better believe it or else they'll be trapped in moral quicksand and swallowed up whole.

Ga-Ga for the iPhone - or Not

When I first read about the iPhone, my gadget genes got excited. What an amazing device! But then I read that the iPhone is only available through Cingular. What kind of stupidity is that? That kind of thinking forgets that I'm locked into my contract with Sprint for two years.

I'm not totally surprised that Jobs would proprietize the carrier - Apple doesn't really play with others well in the first place. But c'mon... what a boneheaded move.

ETC: Thinking about it... maybe Apple's deep desire is to not have broad accessibility to their products. People want what they don't have? Maybe that drives up the mystique. Playing hard to get with the market... hmm...

In the comments, Pale Rider is right - Apple reaped big, I'm sure, from Cingular, which got the exclusive deal. And it has him thinking of staying now with Cingular.

Cingular must be paying apple some big $$$ for this.

And I was just about to switch from Cingular to Verizon. I saw the Verizon "ENVY" commercial this weekend and said I need that phone. Maybe I'll have to wait now.

I don't think Cingular is paying Apple anything. Cingular gets it when it comes to mobile content. And they're the #1 wireless carrier.

Check out why I think they chose Cingular

They've been working out some kind of deal for quite some time. It would be interesting to know what Cingular's Board of Directors approved? http://www.nytimes.com/2007/01/10/business/10cingular.html

With an estimated $499/$599 pricetag (ridiculously higher on e-Bay), Verizon's ENVY is looking better. With that kind of pricing they will definitely be playing "Hard to get."

maybe Apple's deep desire is to not have broad accessibility to their products

This is a good point...the motto is usually 'hipper than thou' with Apple marketing...I've bought into it. :-) I worked for the Apple store for about a week (I was annoyed by their training lack of technique and frankly, the employee discount wasn't enough) and they are pretty blatant with their snobbery. It always surprised me a little that they were even so bourgeois as to venture into retail in the first place. :-) The thing is, once they have you in the cult, they do treat you pretty well and you are hooked for life....and retention is important.

But all that is beside the point. I hate phones, don't even have a cell phone now, but still...they interest me. I wonder what the Cingular deal means to the consumer--not in the wide philosophical sense, but in the practical, how do I get billed, do I have a contract sense...aside from not having any choice.
